Today I'm sharing a free, SCREEN ACCURATE! choker pattern that's ready to print onto A4 sized paper - I've also provided a list of materials that I've found I've needed whilst making my own chokers, but you can of course substitute or remove whatever you want, I'm just sharing a starting point!
Materials and tools:
- needle and thread
- scissors
- hole punch tools can be useful, not you don't absolutely need them
- fabric glue (I like to use this to tidy up the holes)
- screen accurate fabric (I personally like this one)
- 10mm snap fasteners and tools (something like this, make sure you get the colour you want)
- red lining (I like using faux suede)
- a 4cm wide belt base (like these), or any other thick mateiral
- locking tongue buckle for 4cm wide straps (these are extremely difficult to find, so I have one available for 3D printing on Shapeways)
- screen-accurate sliding letters for 4cm wide straps (also extremely difficult to find in the right font and size, so I have these available for 3D printing on Shapeways as well)
- brass heart padlock (there's loads online)
While Shapeways does offer printing services in a huge range of materials including polished brass, they can get very expensive for larger pieces and prettier materials - and most cosplayers I know can't always afford that.
So if you're like me and want the screen accurate pieces, but can't justify spending £60 per sliding letter, you might have to compromise with the cheapest plastic material and do a little extra DIY - which means sanding, priming, and finishing.
> Sand with wet and dry paper.
> Prime with spray primer paint for automobiles (this can be wet-sanded with fine grit wet and dry for a beautiful smooth finish and sticks to almost anything, I adore this stuff)
> Finish with whatever method you want. Gold spray paint will probably be the easiest and most affordable. Gold leaf is also affordable and looks really pretty when done right, but it can be frustrating to apply (I still haven't quite figured it out!)
If you know someone that can gold plate for you, that's also an option.
The Template
Just cut the template out and stick them together to have your full pattern piece.
The dotted lines have been put there to help place the stitching.
I've also marked where to place the snap fasteners, and the holes for the buckle.
I plan to do a detailed tutorial in 2018, but until then I hope everything I've shared will be helpful.
